ESXi 6 and USB storage devices

Hi, VM-Community,

a fresh installed ESXi 6 host shows a strange behaviour:

After setting up the host I created a VM (Windows SBS 2008), added an USB controller in the VM-settings and added an USB device. The USB device is a Toshiba 2TB external drive.

So far, so good. I tried to add a second USB device, this time a Toshiba 1TB drive which should be used for backups. The VM settings only showed me the first 2TB drive. lsusb shows two Toshiba devices

Then I shutdown the VM and rebooted the ESXi host, same result. I tried `usbarbitrator stop`, disconnect the USB devices, reconnect them and `usbarbitrator start`, always the same result.

Now this SBS 2008 VM has gone to production, so I'm backing up to the 2TB drive.

I tried to connect the 1TB drive to another ESXi host, this time version 5.1. lsusb shows the device, but I'm still not able to connect it to any of the VMs on the host.

All of the technique inside the USB devices is the same, only the size of the disk differs.

Does anybody has some hints how to connect this 1TB device (because I bought 5 pieces of them for using as backup media).

Thanks in advance

Klaus
