ESX 5.0 W2k3 R2 users reporting out of memory errors

Hello let me start with I'm very new to VMware and this is a job where I took over an IT guys work that the client did not like.  VMware is installed on a Dell T110 II with 16GB of RAM Intel E31230V2 3.3Ghz processor.  The old IT guy setup 2 W2k3 R2 clients, 2 WinXP clients, and a linux client for admin functions.

The customer only uses 1 W2k3 client where 3-5 users login via RDP to run Quickbooks pro 2013, a little word, and a little excel.  QB's pro 2013 is the only thing that is memory intensive that they do.

The other w2k3 client is just used to backup the datastore to an external drive via USB at once a day.  It has 2GB of memory allocated to it.

The main W2k3 machine 16GB allocated and shows consumed 10.48GB in vsphere.  Guest memory is only 163mb at the time I'm looking at it with no users.

The other 2 WinXP clients I shut down since the client has not used them in ages and I think they were forgotten about and just left running.

So my users reported yesterday that they got a out of memory error when opening a word document. I can't see how even with 5 users on the machine they could use 10.5GB or even 16GB of ram.

The only thing I can think of that might have caused this is that I upped the allocated memory to 16GB from 12GB about a week ago when I turned off the XP VMs.

I checked the event log in vSphere no error reported.  I check the client VM and no memory errors.  Is my user making something up, or should I be worried?
