Re: Restoring a Backup

If the Virtual Machine is properly shutdown from within the Guest OS, not suspended and, at the least, the Tab for the VM is closed in the VMware Workstation GUI then copying the Folder that contains the files that comprises the VM to an alternate location and then restoring it back to the exact original location without having edited and or changing any names of the files that comprise the VM then you should have no issue bringing it back on line and without having to do anything else.  If you restore it to an alternate location then you'll have issues unless you answer "I moved it" when prompted.  Answering "I copied it" chances the UUID and more importantly the MAC Address for the Virtual Ethernet Adapter, which is fine if your replicating a VM and intend to make it unique from it parent. However not so if your trying to retain everything as is.

I always set the following .vmx configuration file option to avoid having to answer the question and keep the UUID and more importantly the same MAC Address for the Virtual Ethernet Adapter.

uuid.action = "keep"

Keep in mind though one should only use this when this is the only VM from this build and used on the same network at the same time as you may not have duplicate MAC Address on the same Subnet at the same time!
