I am using an HP Envy 15 notebook with Windows 8.1, 16GB memory and an AMD A10-5750M APU with Radeon ™ HD Graphics. Both from the install that started with the message-box update from 10.0.3 to 10.0.4 and from an install from a manual download of 10.0.4 I get an abnormal end with a message box that says:
VMware-workstation-10.0.4.2249910
The MSI
‘C:\Users\Tom\AppData\Local\Temp\vmware_1414761622\vmwareworkstation_x_64.msi’ failed.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
I tried to reinstall the 10.0.3 VMWare Workstation that the 10.0.4 installation uninstalled, but now that gives a similar error:
VMware-workstation-10.0.3.1895310
The MSI
‘C:\Users\John\AppData\Local\Temp\vmware_1414813278\vmwareworkstation_x_64.msi’ failed.

I found a web page that acknowleges this type of error in general:
VMware KB: Troubleshooting an MSI error during a VMware product or Tools installation
but it places the blame on a Microsoft product called Windows Installer. This product is not a separate downloadable item for Windows 7 or beyond. Microsoft does not provide support for Windows to individual users. So I would encourage VMWare to use a different installer if possible. It doesn't seem fair to be told the problem is with a product from Microsoft - not us - when I am trying to upgrade one of your products, or reinstall one of your products that your later upgrade uninstalled.
